  The Young Bride's Fate

  “Cara!”

Cara jumped, almost spilling the laundry she had been carrying across the yard onto the ground. She managed to catch the basket before it upended, and she turned to see the short, plump brunette glaring at her, her hands full of clothes pegs.

  “Mother! I almost dropped everything!”

“You should have been paying better attention.” Angela Mills shook her head. “You clearly haven’t been listening to a word I said.”

“I…” Cara knew it was pointless to lie. She didn’t like lying and she really hadn’t been listening to her mother. She looked down at the ground, feeling the blush creeping up her neck. “Sorry, Mother. That was thoughtless of me.”

“I should say so.” Angela planted her hands on her hips and scowled at her daughter. “Were you dreaming again?”

“Of course not. I was focused on doing my work.”

That much was true. Cara liked hard work; it made her feel like she was actually doing something. She liked to be useful. Her parents had instilled a strong work ethic in her and Cara did her best to follow it. It also gave her a chance to get lost in her own thoughts and think about life outside of the mission.

“You can’t wander off in your own thoughts when God is speaking to you.” Angela scolded. “It’s incredibly rude.”

  “Sorry, Mother.” Cara mumbled.

She was almost eighteen and the mission had been all she had known since they had left Charlotte. Her parents were very restrictive and they preferred to look after others, spreading the word of God. Cara didn’t have a problem with God but He hadn’t been on speaking terms with her lately. Whether it was because she had become disillusioned or she was changing as she grew up, Cara didn’t know. But it wasn’t something she could discuss with her parents. They wouldn’t be too happy at all that their only child was drifting off the path. Cara knew they loved her but sometimes their love for God won out.

It was frustrating to compete with a divine spirit, one that always seemed to win.

Angela Mills was the worst for it. Her father had been a preacher and she had taken after him in a big way. Cara had met her grandfather as a child and while she was God-fearing, his preaching made her uncomfortable. Now it was rubbing off on his daughter.

“I swear,” Angela tittered as she began to peg more damp clothes onto the line, “Your faith seems to be slipping lately.”

“It hasn’t slipped.” Cara adjusted her grip on the basket, moving it higher up her hip. “I’m just tired.”

“You’re always tired. But we cannot ignore God’s work.”

Cara couldn’t help herself. She snorted.

“If God has work, why does He delegate it to us and not do it Himself?”

  Her mother glared at her.

“Because He can.” She said through gritted teeth. “Now get on with your work.”

Cara huffed and went inside. They still had a long list of chores to do on top of their mission work. They were less than a day’s ride from McMinnville and several travelers passed them on the Oregon Trail. They would stop for supplies, rest and tending to if they were ill or injured. And they would pray to God for their safe travel.

There were times when Cara did wonder why they bothered. But she couldn’t really argue; her family had made the journey ten months before and they had settled here, setting up a mission station with a hospital and a place for people to rest their heads and look after their horses. Cara liked the bustle of the day and enjoyed helping people. But lately she had begun to wonder if that was all she was going to do. All she knew, for certain, was God’s work. And that was starting to fray on her nerves.

She wanted to do something different. Cara wanted to go somewhere new and try something else. Work somewhere else. But her father said she was to stay on the mission station, that this was her calling. Cara didn’t think likewise.

Her relationship with God was suffering as a result. Cara knew the only way to salvage it would be to start afresh elsewhere. If only her parents would understand that. Forcing God’s word down her throat had her wanting to run away from it all.

Cara went into their house and put the laundry down. There were many beds to be made and clothes to fold. It would take most of the afternoon, she was sure of it. Cara didn’t like making beds; she never seemed to do it to her mother’s satisfaction. And she could never fold the clothes correctly. Cara never understood why Angela didn’t do it herself.
